DRAFT #2: The Peer Response for Small Group Workshops
REMEMBER:
- Be constructive and encouraging. But don't just make empty, flattering statements. Make suggestions.
- Use the expression: What if...
Respond to each of the prompts below:
- Name 3 specific ways that this essay has improved since the first draft.
- Do you have all the basic orienting facts? Who. What. When. Where. Why. If not, what's missing? Be specific. Tell the author everything that you still need to know or better understand.
- Is this the right order for the story? Why or why not? (If you think the story could be re-arranged in an order that made more sense, suggest it.)
- What characterization is the strongest in this draft?
- What characterization needs the most development? How?
- What scene is strongest? Why?
- What scene needs the most development? Why? What should the scene do that it's not doing now?
- Are there scenes that are not in this draft but could or should be in the next draft?
- What reflection is strongest? Why?
- Where does the essay need more reflection? Be specific, cite the page and paragraph. What could this reflection be about?
- (a) What is the essay's turning point? (b) Quote at least once sentence from it. (c) Is this turning point clear enough and developed enough?
- Does the story have a good, strong, succinct resolution? What suggestions do you have for how to end this story?
You must write a peer response for each of your peer's essays in your small group. The Peer Response should be at least two pages double spaced, typed. Make sure to indicate which questions you are answering by including the number above, along with your response to it. Peer responses will be graded on your attempt to provide clear, constructive criticism . You will receive a grade for the overall quality of your peer responses at the end of the term.
Make sure to be bring TWO COPIES of your peer response to the small group workshop. One to give to me or Jennifer and one to give to the author.
